A logo is the first step in branding and marketing your business. It is a graphical representation of what you do, and can even give your potential clients an idea of what you do. The most innovative, and impressive logos are subtle, and smart. What does that mean? Creating a logo that is subtle and smart means that it reaches your audience without a lot of effort. Of course it's always the effortless logos that are the hardest to design, but in the end you want the logo to communicate a multitude of things without being obvious.
Take for instance a simple recognizable logo such as the logo for Target. It's obvious that the circles form a target, but the logo conveys more than that. Target took over the retail market when most of the popular big chain stores had become old fashioned, and drab. The logo for target at that time was undeniably modern and fresh. It told potential customers that they were the new wave of big box retail and pushed them to the front of everyone's mind. It's no wonder that in the years following Target's takeover, many of the big box chain stores revamped their logos and store layouts to reach the same audience that went for Target's modern approach.
And important thing to note about logo design, is that no two businesses are the same. Two carpet stores in the same town may seem like the same in description, but they have two different owners, atmospheres and products. By having a logo professionally designed to fit the style and feel of your business you are telling potential clients who you are. Having a custom designed logo gives your business the ability to stand out from competitors and reach the clients you're trying to reach.
All logo designs start by meeting with our client. During the meeting we will discuss colors, basic ideas, key words, imagery, and the company's mission and target audience. From there we will brainstorm ideas based on the information gathered. Sometimes this involves sketching in a notepad, or researching symbols and imagery online.
Once we have a few ideas set in place we will begin to create the potential logos on the computer. This process is a crucial period in logo development. In most cases, one of the logos designed during this time will be the base for the final draft. When the potential logos are completed they are sent to the client for review.
The review process in logo design is one of the most important parts. It is during this time that the final logo begins to take shape. Whether the client is drawn to a certain logo, or likes elements of different ones, they are able to discuss with their designer exactly where they want the logo to go from this point and gives us exactly what we need to create the final logo.
After the review, our designers will adjust and prepare the agreed upon logo for final review.* Once the client approves the final logo review, our team creates a document that includes all of the details about their new logo. This includes the exact colors used, the variety of layouts available (vertical/horizontal), and the details of how the logo was created. Clients are able to use this information in the future when designing branded materials and/or their website.
*Some logo packages give the option of more than one review with LT Web Design. Contact us for more information.
